Message from Superintendent King to the L.A. Unified Family -- Sunday, Oct. 1.

This is Superintendent Michelle King with an important message for our L.A. Unified families.

As both an educator and a parent, it is difficult for me to deliver this message. Our District was recently contacted by law enforcement with some deeply disturbing information regarding allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct involving a musical performer who works with different school districts across Southern California. This performer allegedly distributed a flute-like musical instrument called a recorder during his lessons. The allegation is that he may have contaminated some of these instruments with semen.

Our records indicate that this individual has never been an employee or registered volunteer in L.A. Unified. However, three of our schools may be involved, and out of an abundance of caution, we have notified the parents and guardians of those students.

We currently have no information that other L.A. Unified schools are involved. However, if you believe your child is in possession of an instrument provided by this individual, we ask that you place the item in a paper bag and deliver it to your nearest Los Angeles Police Department front desk. For all other questions pertaining to this investigation, please call the United States Postal Inspection Service at 626.405.1352. If you have immediate health concerns, please seek guidance from your child's healthcare provider or your local county health agency. Our Office of Nursing Services is also available to answer health questions from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 213.202.7580.

As always, the health and safety of our students remains our top priority. Please be assured that we are fully cooperating with law enforcement on this serious issue on behalf of our students, families and dedicated staff of L.A. Unified.

Thank you.
