Statement from School Board President Steve Zimmer On Ruling Upholding the Rights of Transgender Students

We applaud yesterday's ruling by the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals upholding the civil, human and constitutional rights of transgender students in our public schools. The court's unequivocal and unanimous ruling affirms that every student should be able to authentically participate in their education. Yesterday's ruling in favor of Ash Whitaker and his family strengthens the 4th Circuit's ruling in favor of Gavin Grimm in Virginia, and sends a clear message that our nation and our courts stand for the rights and dignity of all children in our public schools.

Here in L.A. Unified, we stand with our transgender students today and every day. Our school district family embraces, supports and loves every student who comes to our schoolhouse door. We will continue to uphold the rights and the dignity of our transgender students and all students.

Access to an affirming education is only a small part of what our District does to ensure that the dreams of all students and their families can come true through public education. Today, as we prepare to celebrate Pride Month, we re-commit ourselves to ensure that no student ever feels alone. We are all L.A. Unified.
