Kindergarten Students in East L.A. Have A Seat Waiting For Them At East Los Angeles College and Cal State LA

LOS ANGELES (March 21, 2017) -- Today at Sheridan Street Elementary School in Boyle Heights, the Senior Class of 2029, made up of 2,220 kindergarten students, received college admission certificates. The third annual Great Outcomes East Los Angeles (GO East LA) commitment ceremony encouraged the future graduates to become college-  and career-ready.

Kindergartener Merlyna Aguila shared her plans, “When I grow up I want to be a teacher to help children learn to read and write and be kind. I want to teach them to be nice and successful and help them make good choices so they can go to college when they grow up.”

Aguia’s mother also shared the sentiment, “I remember my mother’s advice. ‘The best inheritance you can leave your children is an education.’ Every day, I try to motivate them and help them with their homework and projects. She quoted Malcom X, ‘Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.’”

GO East LA is a partnership between School Board Member Mónica García, Local District East of the Los Angeles Unified School District, East Los Angeles College and Cal State Los Angeles.

A champion of children, García said, “We have high expectations for each of you. We are committed to work with your parents, principals and teachers. She added, “We will work together to change the world.”

Superintendent Michelle King praised the symbolism of the ceremony, “Right now, all across our city and state many students are receiving college acceptance letters. Well, today you too are receiving your notice with a guaranteed spot at East Los Angeles College or Cal State LA. Thank you to our partners for paving the way for the future of our students.”

Go East LA’s mission is to promote a college-going culture and greater educational outcomes for all students in Boyle Heights and East L.A., including those attending nearby elementary and middle schools. High school graduates who meet all academic requirements are guaranteed admission to East Los Angeles College and Cal State Los Angeles.
