Statement from Superintendent Michelle King And School Board President Steve Zimmer On Anniversary of the Dec. 15 Shutdown

Dec. 15, 2016

As we think about a difficult day one year ago – when we closed all L.A. Unified schools for the first time ever due to a threat – we are reminded of the extraordinary effort by the Los Angeles Unified School Police and other law-enforcement partners. As they do every day, these dedicated men and women made it their top priority to ensure our students, employees, families and schools were safe.

We also want to thank our L.A. Unified employees and families for their support and the sacrifices they made as we worked through a very intense day. Together, we emerged from the shadows of uncertainty and fear and pushed on to become stronger and more aware.

As we move forward, we also recognize the importance of reflecting on critical incidents to evaluate and introduce best practices. We support our chief of police, the School Police Department and those entrusted to protect as they continue to do everything in their power to make sure our schools are safe.
