LOS ANGELES (Aug. 23, 2016) - The Board of Education voted unanimously today to extend health benefits to teacher assistants and playground aides, who are represented by Service Employees International Union Local 99.
The agreement provides health, dental and vision coverage for teacher assistants who work at least 800 hours annually (or 41/2 hours a day) in a single assignment. The District will pay half the insurance premium for playground aides who work at least 1,000 hours annually (or 5-1/2 hours a day) in a single assignment. Employees are responsible for paying premiums for any dependents included on their policy.
“The classified workers of SEIU Local 99 are some of our most dedicated and selfless workers who directly interact with students on a day-to-day basis,” School Board President Steve Zimmer said. “I am proud to support today's action which ensures that our workers and their families will have access to expanded healthcare options. We need to make sure that the women and men who take care of LAUSD's children by day can care for their own families by night.”
“Congratulations to Superintendent King and SEIU Local 99 on the ratification of today’s agreement,” said Board Member Mónica García. “We appreciate the leadership and partnership that has been key to increasing high-quality schools and quality jobs on the path to 100 percent graduation in Los Angeles.”
Superintendent Michelle King noted that the agreement extends health benefits to about 4,200 members of Local 99 who work side-by-side with fully insured colleagues.
“We believe it is in the best interest of the District to support the teacher assistants and playground aides who are committed to providing a safe and nurturing learning environment for our students,” she said.
These new benefits will take effect starting with 2017-18.
