District Response to State Testing of Schools Near Former Exide Technologies Plant

Aug. 18, 2016

L.A. Unified is working with the state Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) to ensure the continued safety of all students and employees at campuses near the former Exide Technologies facility.

DTSC and L.A. Unified coordinated soil sampling beginning last year at 22 campuses located near the Vernon site. Initial results showed that no additional action was required at 18 of the campuses. Four others – Eastman Avenue, Fishburn Avenue, Lorena Street and Rowan Avenue Elementary schools – required additional tests before a final determination could be made. As recommended by DTSC, and in an abundance of caution, the District installed temporary fencing at Fishburn, Lorena and Rowan in order to restrict access to specific areas of the campuses.

Late Wednesday, DTSC notified the District that cleanup is not necessary at Eastman and Fishburn, and that no additional action is needed.

We are awaiting a final determination from DTSC on the Lorena and Rowan campuses.

Results of the DTSC samples are available on the District’s website: http://achieve.lausd.net/Page/2030.
