The course, called Spirit Safety Certification, provides information to help coaches in the nation’s second-largest school district evaluate their cheer and dance programs for safety.
Instructors learn cheer and dance techniques that could help their students avoid injuries. The online course, created by the National Federation of High Schools, costs $75 per person.
“The Interscholastic Athletic Department is proud to announce a partnership with LA84 to train our cheerleading sponsors in a safety course provided by the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators,” said Trenton Cornelius, coordinator, L.A. Unified’s athletic department.
He added, “This certification will educate our cheerleaders to ensure safety, as we transfer cheer oversight to the Interscholastic Athletic Department.”
LA84, endowed with surplus funds from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, and the district will share the cost of offering the courses. Roughly, 70 coaches are expected to participate in the training, Cornelius said.
