Statement by Superintendent Michelle King and General Counsel David Holmquist on Legal Settlements

May 17, 2016

The School District resolved the litigation with 10 plaintiffs at Telfair for $23.7 million and 37 plaintiffs at De La Torre for $58 million.

The following is a statement from Superintendent Michelle King regarding the settlements:

"There is nothing more important than the safety of the students we serve. The resolution of these cases allows us to spare our L.A. Unified families the anguish of multiple protracted trials while being mindful of the financial consequences of these settlements.

"Well before the resolution of these cases, the School District made changes in our policies and practices to strengthen the protections for our students. While we are proud of the steps we have taken, we will continue to work diligently with our parents and the community to provide the safest possible environment for our students to learn and succeed."

The following is a statement from General Counsel David Holmquist:

"Our priority has been to resolve these cases without the need for potentially painful litigation for these students and their families. While the settlements will provide for the students’ future needs, we remain committed to fostering healing among them, their families and the entire school community.

We appreciate the diligent work and respectful manner in which our counsel resolved these cases, and we hope this will help bring closure for these students, their families and all involved."
