Statement by Superintendent King on L.A. Mayor’s Offer to give L.A. Unified Graduates a Year of Community College for Free

 April 14, 2016

The entire L.A. Unified family applauds Mayor Garcetti’s announcement to offer our graduates a free year of community college. This bold proposal sends a powerful message that all hard-working L.A. Unified students deserve a robust college education, without taking on decades' worth of student debt.

Approximately 80 percent of our students meet the federal definition of living in poverty, and research shows that family income level may be the top barrier in preventing students from attending college.  Today’s announcement may help to reduce such disparities from occurring, and encourage more students to bolster their future through academic achievement.

This is a tremendous opportunity for L.A. Unified students, and we are grateful to Mayor Garcetti and the many partners who worked so hard to make this happen.
