Statement from School Board President Zimmer on L.A.’s Plan to Offer Graduates One Year of Free Community College

 April 14, 2016

With today’s announcement, a huge burden could be lifted from thousands of L.A. Unified graduates. Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti delivered outstanding news for our students, saying they can attend community college without charge for a year.

During my many years working as a counselor, I saw my students struggle mightily to balance the cost of college fees with the basic survival needs of their family. All too often, dreams of a college degree fell victim to the immediate economic necessities. Today's announcement could mean less of these agonizing choices, stressors and distractions.

It could very well mean our students with the most potential will have a chance to realize a uniquely Los Angeles version of the American Dream.
