The Division of Instruction will open the academy as part of the Los Angeles Unified School District in 2017-18 with a focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). It will start with grades 6 and 9, and will add a grade level each year, eventually serving 700 students in Grades 6-12.
“We need to do everything we can to help every student succeed,” said School Board Vice President Dr. George McKenna III, a former principal at Washington Prep. “This single-gender school may be the best fit for some boys.”
The Division of Instruction proposed the school based on research showing that an all-boys school focusing on the academic achievement and emotional growth of young men produces positive results.
“The District is committed to providing programs that fulfill the different needs of our students,” said Superintendent Michelle King. “The rigorous STEM curriculum will provide our young men with a clear pathway to college, with the expectation that they will develop important skills and discover their potential.”
