Statement by Superintendent Michelle King on Los Angeles Regional Adult Education Consortium funding agreement

Feb. 9, 2016

We are very excited that the Los Angeles Regional Adult Education Consortium has accepted a funding agreement that will allow L.A. Unified to receive more than $15 million to support the District’s adult learners. After months of stalled discussions, we negotiated an agreement with Los Angeles Community College Chancellor Francisco C. Rodriguez that will disburse 90 percent of their allocation to L.A. Unified and the four other consortium members. L.A. Unified has the largest adult education program in the nation, and this funding is vital to the nearly 100,000 students who are striving to improve their lives by learning basic educational skills, achieving citizenship or training for a career. This compromise will allow us to continue our important work while the final funding distribution is discussed.
