Ensuring the safety of our students is at the heart of L.A. Unified’s school employee disciplinary system, and it has remained our focus as we have worked to continuously improve the process. The District has benefited from a Student Safety Investigative Team to handle allegations of serious misconduct, which allows these cases to be resolved in a more expeditious manner. As a result, we have greatly reduced the number of overall cases. In addition, teachers suspected of misconduct that would not endanger student safety can now remain in the classroom while the allegations against them are investigated. Those who pose a threat to student safety will be reassigned, as our primary commitment is to student safety. We have worked closely with United Teachers Los Angeles, and now meet monthly with union leaders to review the misconduct cases. We look forward to the State Auditor’s recommendations for additional insight into further improvements to help us provide a safe and secure environment for teaching and learning.
