A Statement on Relocating Two Porter Ranch Area Schools

Dec. 16, 2015
Since late October, parents, employees and residents at Castlebay Lane Charter and Porter Ranch Community School have been raising concerns about the effects of the Aliso Canyon natural-gas leak. To ensure that our schools, students and faculty remain safe, Los Angeles Unified installed air filters in every classroom, assigned additional nurses and initiated daily air-quality monitoring at the two campuses.

The odorant added to the natural gas has become a distraction to the teaching and learning taking place at our schools. As a result, the Board of Education will be considering a proposal on Thursday that will support the temporary relocation of Castlebay Lane Charter and Porter Ranch Community School to other District sites when classes resume after winter break.

We are working with all of our departments – including Instruction, Facilities, Transportation and Food Services – to make this temporary move as seamless as possible. More information will become available as we finalize the plan in the days and weeks ahead, and we will communicate details of the relocation as they become available. This temporary relocation will allow us to provide a stable environment to support effective learning.
