Statement from Superintendent Ramon C. Cortines On Results of the Smarter Balanced Assessments

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 9, 2015) -- This is the first time that Los Angeles Unified, as a district, has seen results from the new Smarter Balanced Assessments, which we will use to help identify school and student strengths, as well as areas that need improvement.

The results show that some schools are succeeding with the new standards while others need more support. However, this is not a time to be pleased or displeased with the results, as these assessments provide a roadmap for how we can better prepare our students for college or the workforce.  Each of our local districts will be analyzing these results so that we can strategically provide support to individual school sites.

As we all expected, the overall results of these more rigorous assessments show that we still have more work to do. However, we are committed to strengthening our efforts and providing the support our students need to meet these challenging new standards.
