LOS ANGELES (July 1, 2015) — At its annual meeting for the 2015-16 school year, the Los Angeles Board of Education on Wednesday unanimously elected Board Member Steve Zimmer as president. In his first action he appointed Board Member Dr. George J. McKenna, III to serve as vice president.
The meeting also included the swearing-in of two re-elected board members and two newly elected board members.
Representing Board District 1, Dr. George McKenna was sworn in for his first complete term, which will end in 2020. He was originally elected last year to fulfill the remaining term of the late Board Member Marguerite Poindexter LaMotte.
Representing Board District 3, Scott Mark Schmerelson was sworn-in for his first term, which will end in 2020.
Representing Board District 5, Dr. Ref Rodriguez was sworn-in for his first term, which will end in 2020.
Representing Board District 7, Dr. Richard Vladovic was sworn-in for his third term, which will end in 2020.
These board members will serve for five-years, instead of the traditional four-year terms because future school board races will now be held at the same time as statewide elections. The next school board meeting is scheduled on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015, although the new president said he hoped to set a meeting next month.
The first day of school for the 2015-16 academic year will be Tuesday, Aug. 18, with the exception of Bell Senior High School, the only campus in the Los Angeles Unified School District that operates on a multi-track, year-round calendar to relieve overcrowding. At that school, the first day of instruction for Tracks B, C and D began today. The school is expected to operate on the traditional August-June schedule, starting with the 2017-18 school year.
