LAUSD to Offer Summer Programs

LOS ANGELES (June 15, 2015) —Starting today, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) will offer summer programs at elementary, middle, and high schools. However, L.A. Unified will provide limited academic support services, including summer school courses for high school students who have failed classes during the academic year and students in grades k-8 who have been identified by their local school as needing academic support. Also,L.A. Unified will provide families with a variety of age appropriate links to online Internet resources designed to keep youngsters academically and actively engaged during the summer months.
 
High School 2015 Credit Recovery Summer School Program
Students enrolled in District high schools during the 2015 spring semester and who need to recover credits for a D or F grade will be eligible to enroll in up to two classes at selected high schools. The program will be held from June 15 through July 17 with no school held on July 3 in observance of the Independence Day holiday. Classes will be held daily from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Meals will be served during a half-hour nutrition break between classes. Academic Support at Select Middle and Elementary Schools
A special four-week 2015 CORE Waiver Extended Learning Opportunity Summer Program will be available at select schools. This program is designed to help children meet grade-level standards in mathematics or English language arts. The program will be held June 15 to July 10 from 8:30 a.m.-11:50 a.m. with meals provided during or after the school day. Student enrollment is based on eligibility, priority, and available space. Summer Pool Program
Summer of 2015 will see the return of the Beyond the Bell Branch Portable Pool Program. Since it began in 1963, the Portable Pool Program has been a fixture in summer programming for Beyond the Bell. Aligned with California’s water conservation and recycling initiative, the program will run in 16 LAUSD schools with a 4-week rotation. For more information contact Steven Alvarado at 213-633-3535.

iConnect Beyond The Bell
Recognizing that learning takes place anytime, anywhere, in partnership with dozens of organizations throughout the city, Beyond the Bell launches its new initiative, iConnect Beyond The Bell http://iConnectBeyondTheBell.lausd.net ). This summer, whether students are interested in sports, art, science, history, nature, music, dance, technology, L.A. has something for everyone. The iConnect website provides access to educational summer resources and supplemental reading materials to enhance your child’s learning experience. Comprehensive Summer Enrichment Programs
The District’s Beyond the Bell Branch will operate Summer Enrichment Programs at more than 200 elementary and middle schools during the summer vacation period. The programs will provide daily activities Monday through Friday, beginning June 15. Meals will be served. Each program will include three components—academic, enrichment and recreation. Online Resources
The District’s Beyond the Bell Branch will provide a variety of online resources for students, which will be accessible from the Beyond the Bell Branch website. Beginning in June, students and families can reinforce learning, and provide online projects and activities to keep youngsters engaged during the summer months.
