Fourteen Students to Compete in National Skills Competition Excelled at State Level

LOS ANGELES – Graduating students who are college-prepared and career-ready is the mission of the Los Angeles Unified School District. As a result, 14 students will travel to Louisville next month to the National Skills USA competition.

“LAUSD students excel in many categories. Equipped with superior skills, these students will proudly represent this school district at the national level. Congratulations to the students and their teachers from the Division of Adult and Career Education.”

SkillsUSA, formerly known as the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, emphasizes excellence in career and technical education subject areas, ranging from auto mechanics to web design. The organization also stresses leadership and teamwork. Students compete in teams or individually.

Heading to the national contest are students who won at the state level. From the Friedman Occupational Center, they are John Fleming, gold, graphic imaging; teammates Danica Antiporda, Victoria Henos and Lyanne Umana, gold, career pathways showcase—Umana also won gold, state pin design and teammates Victoria Lopez and Caviar Keys, gold, promotional bulletin board/leadership.
From the Slawson Southeast Occupational Center, they are Richardo Hernandez, gold, building & grounds; Michael Almaguer, gold, mobile electronics; David Escobedo, gold, jobs skills demonstration; teammates Immanuel Brown, Patrick Salagubang and Robert Childress, gold, automotive engineering tech; and either Max Najera and or Benjamin Jerez, silver, mobile electronics from the Slawson Southeast Occupational Center.

East Los Angeles Occupational teacher Irene Saavedra also is attending the national event, and will be recognized with the national honorary life membership award.

In the California contests, Friedman students also won a team gold medal in graphic design, a silver medal in job skill demo, a team gold medal in leadership and a team silver medal in web design. Harbor Occupational Center students won a silver medal in diesel and a gold medal in Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning. Slawson Southeast Occupational Center students also won a team gold medal and a silver medal in automotive and mobile electronics, and a gold medal in building and grounds.

The participants are L.A. Unified students, adult students and members of the Job Corps.

At the national leadership and skills conference, scheduled from June 22-26, more than 6,000 high school and post-secondary students will compete in 100 trade, technical and leadership fields.
