LOS ANGELES (Oct. 10, 2014) – In a continuous effort to provide a quality education at Jefferson High School, Los Angeles Unified School District staff have supported scheduling efforts to meet the academic needs of students since school opened in August 2014. In response to the Temporary Restraining Order issued by the Court in the matter of the Cruz v. State of California, et al., District representatives met today in a day-long session with representatives from the State of California, State Department of Education, State Superintendent’s Office, and the State Board of Education to ensure that every requirement specified by the Court is included in the proposed plan.
Michelle King, Senior Deputy Superintendent, School Operations, Dr. Tommy Chang, Superintendent of the Intensive Support and Innovation Educational Service Center (ISIC), the Office of the General Counsel, as well as other pertinent District staff provided state representatives with the opportunity to discuss findings, assist with devising a proposed plan, as well as provide input and suggestions that will be part of an overall plan that will be presented to the Board for action at a subsequent meeting.
“Since Day 1 of this school year, our team has worked with Jefferson High School staff to review transcripts, enhance the master schedule, as well as work to ensure that all students have access to courses that lead to graduation,” King said. “Over the last 24 hours, we have reconvened these efforts once again to identify any ‘Affected Students’ as specified in the TRO.”
The District’s proposed plan also included many of the recommendations from the faculty of Jefferson High School as provided by United Teachers Los Angeles for consideration by the Board of Education.
Following the meeting with state representatives, District staff met with representatives from the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) to discuss action steps that are being taken, as well as to obtain input from LACOE representatives.
