Keeping Children Safe at School Amid the Heat Wave

Sept. 16

Los Angeles County health officials have extended a heat alert through Wednesday, Sept. 17. For this reason, all outdoor activities at L.A. Unified schools will be cancelled or moved indoors through Wednesday to protect students from the heat. (Please see the attached document.)

Also, L.A. Unified is aware of the problems with the air conditioning units affecting many of our schools. We take these issues very seriously. Nearly 500 air conditioning service calls have been received since yesterday. When possible, students and staff have been relocated to other classrooms or multipurpose rooms with air conditioning to continue instruction. A crew of workers have been evaluating and fixing every issue.

Thank you to the students, teachers, principals, staff and volunteers for being patient as cooling systems get back up and running. In the meantime, if there is a building or grounds issue at an LAUSD school, please check with the school principal first to see if the matter has been reported. If not, please use this link:  http://mo.laschools.org/applications/mo/workorder-request/, or call the Service Call Hotline number at 213-745-1600.

Thank you again from the entire Maintenance and Operations team.
