Superintendent’s Statement on Common Core Technology Project

We have not canceled the District’s Common Core Technology Project (CCTP). As stated very clearly in my recent memo to the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education (Board), I have directed that we halt our use of the current Apple Inc. contract and implement a new Request for Proposals (RFP) solicitation for personal computing devices before bringing future phases of the CCTP to the Board for approval. We remain committed to providing students devices that support their access to a world of learning and discovery so they are better prepared to graduate college and career ready.
Not only will this decision enable us to take advantage of an ever-changing marketplace and technology advances, it will also give us time to take into account successes and concerns learned in the initial phases of the CCTP, and receive new information from the California Department of Education regarding assessments. We will incorporate the lessons learned from the original procurement process, including the initial phases and the laptop pilot. Specifically, we will be re-visiting the criteria on which original specifications were based, as well as review vendor responses and student feedback from the tablet deployment and laptop pilot. We expect our current contractor and their subcontractor to participate in the upcoming RFP. 
We have worked hard and are proud of the progress we have made – and will continue to make through additional phases – on this project. The CCTP supports the District’s transition to the Common Core State Standards and its commitment to provide an individualized, interactive and informative-rich learning environment. We look forward to refining our processes and ultimately achieve our vision to equip every one of our students with a personal computing device to help them succeed in the 21st century. This is exactly what our students need and deserve.
