Marshall High School Wins 2014 U.S. Academic Decathlon Online Competition

LOS ANGELES (May 9, 2014)  — Marshall High School in the Los Angeles School Unified School District won the 2014 U.S. Academic Decathlon Online competition, scoring 39,461 out of a possible 48,000 points.

The virtual win gives the District its third first-place victory in this year’s national competition. El Camino Real Charter High School’s decathletes won the 2014 U.S. Academic Decathlon championship on April 26 in Honolulu. L.A. Unified swept the state, national and online Academic Decathlon events for the fourth year in a row.

“I am so proud of our Marshall High School Academic Decathlon team for winning the online competition,” said Board Member Bennett Kayser, who represents Marshall High School. ““Once again, Marshall High School’s Academic Decathletes have prevailed, this time online. Congrats to the Aca-Deca team for again putting the spotlight on academic excellence at LAUSD.”

“Marshall’s remarkable victory in the online competition represents another great performance by a LAUSD school in the Academic Decathlon,” said Superintendent John Deasy. “Congratulations to the team members and coach from Marshall for finishing No. 1 in the nation.”

Members of Marshall’s winning team were: Aninda Bhowmick; Kimiyo Bremer; Alexander Guillen; Kenneth Huh; Ha Min Ko; John Lascano; Wen Lee; Alayna Myrick and Marvin Paparisto. The coach is Larry Welch.
The top two teams in California, El Camino Real Charter and Granada Hills Charter, competed in Honolulu for the nationals. The other teams were eligible to compete in the national online events, based on their enrollment. Marshall represented California in the Large Schools Division made up of nine schools.
On April 26, when L.A. Unified teams were competing for the academic crown, Marshall was frantically answering questions using their keyboards in economics, language/literature, math, music, science and social studies.
Marshall exceeded their expectations by recording the highest score of all teams, across all divisions in the online competition.
Recently, Marshall won the District’s Academic Decathlon. The following schools have won the U.S. Academic Decathlon Online competition: Marshall in the inaugural year 2010 and again in 2011; El Camino Real Charter in 2012; and Franklin in 2013.
