L.A. Unified Opens Satellite Fingerprinting Sites for Parent Volunteers

LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles Unified parents who want to volunteer at their child’s school can now get fingerprinted at a District office in their neighborhood rather than going downtown, thanks to a resolution sponsored by Board Member Tamar Galatzan.

Previously, potential volunteers were required to drive to the District headquarters at 333 S. Beaudry Ave. — the only site open to parents — to have their fingerprints taken. The passage of the resolution opens up additional fingerprint satellite offices that were previously available only to District employees.

“This resolution seeks to make it easier to volunteer in LAUSD,” Galatzan said.  “Allowing volunteers to help on campus gives interested parents a way to support the school, and builds strong ties between school, home and community. Research also shows that parent involvement is associated with higher student achievement.”

Applicants pay $56 to cover the fees charged to process the fingerprints through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. Department of Justice. Applicants must present a California driver’s license or identification card and a Social Security number. Payment is by money order or cashier’s check made out to LAUSD.

Co-sponsored by board Vice President Steve Zimmer and Board Member Mónica García, the resolution also recommends holding a “one-stop-shop volunteer day” in each Board District and creating an online application form for parents. Those plans are still in the works, and parents must continue to complete paper applications.

Rowena Lagrosa,  executive director of the Parents and Community Student Services Branch, said an online form would expedite the process for parents to become involved at their child’s school. The division processed about 13,500 volunteer applications last school year.

"A new online volunteer application is being developed which will result in a more user-friendly and efficient process for volunteer applicants,” Lagrosa said. “Additionally, more sites across the Los Angeles Unified School District have been opened in order to facilitate the finger printing process for volunteer applicants for whom it is required."

Fingerprinting is done 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, serving the following Educational Service Centers. Please call ahead to schedule an appointment:
