School Board Approves Special Election to Fill District 1 Vacancy

LOS ANGELES (Jan. 7, 2014) – The Los Angeles Board of Education approved by a 4-to-2 margin tonight a motion that would fill the vacancy created by the death of Board Member Marguerite Poindexter LaMotte with a special election.

The motion also directs the District’s legal team to suggest options at the next board meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 14, for possible interim representation of Board District 1 prior to the special election. The Board expressed a preference for the primary election to take place on June 3, 2014.

The vote took place after close to 100 speakers voiced their opinions on two options: Appoint a Board Member or approve a special election.

The meeting adjourned shortly after 10 p.m.
