The Los Angeles Board of Education voted today to hold a special meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014 to consider a single item: How to fill the seat formerly held by Board Member Marguerite Poindexter LaMotte, who died recently.
LOS ANGELES – Out of profound respect for my friend and colleague, the School Board chose to avoid debate today on how to fill the vacancy created by the untimely passing of Ms. Marguerite Poindexter LaMotte. A motion, which would have allowed the discussion today, failed.
It was with a heavy heart that I asked everyone here in the boardroom and those watching at home to join us in a moment of silence to honor our friend, our leader, Ms. LaMotte.
Today’s meeting was adjourned in her memory and honor. I cited her personal and professional biography. Not only had I served with her on the Board, we also worked together when we were both principals. I also attended the educational conference in San Diego, where she passed away doing what she loved. We are going to miss our friend and our colleague for the rest of our lives.
A public memorial will be held on Saturday, Jan.18, 2014.
