Ullah, LAUSD Honored for Computer Science Courses

LOS ANGELES (Dec. 10, 2013) — The Los Angeles City Council honored Friday the Los Angeles Unified School District and an administrator for encouraging students in the nation’s-second largest school district to learn computer programming.

Dr. Todd Ullah was honored, along with L.A. Unified for their efforts. Councilman Bob Blumenfield, the District 3 representative who chairs the city’s Innovation, Technology and General Services committee, and Councilman Mike Bonin, of the 11th District, presented Ullah with a proclamation, along with Microsoft Corp., UCLA, a nonprofit known as, Code.Org, L.A. Unified and others. The council declared Dec. 9-15 as Computer Science Education Week.

Many District schools will participate this week in an “Hour of   Code,” a national initiative by Code.Org that is designed to demystify computer programming. The event stresses writing code to create software and other applications.

“All learning in the 21st Century is going to be connected to code,” said Ullah, a District administrator. “The more our school kids are prepared, the better off our community will be.”
Ullah needs no such prodding. Guided by his partnership efforts with UCLA, L.A. Unified remains a national model in teaching computer science. “Hour of Code” organizers sought the District’s advice in planning the event that could draw more than 10 million students nationwide.
As leader of the District’s code-writing effort, Ullah also helped design the academic studies that introduces students to opportunities linked in computer science. Such a career path often depends less upon excelling in math and sciences and more upon a student’s willingness to learn. Ullah touts that a solid grounding in basic subjects forms a foundation for other careers as well.

He was among those from L.A. Unified on Tuesday spreading the message to students, including those at the UCLA Community School on the Robert F. Kennedy campus, located near the mid-Wilshire area of Los Angeles. That is where the District celebrated the launch of computer science week.
“The ‘Hour of Code’ is a step in the right direction,” Ullah said.
