School Board Holds Annual Meeting for 2013-14

LOS ANGELES — At its annual meeting for the 2013-14 school year, the Los Angeles Board of Education, by a 5-2 vote today, elected Board Member Dr. Richard Vladovic to serve as president.

Board Members Mónica Garcia and Tamar Galatzan voted no. President Dr. Vladovic appointed Board Member Steve Zimmer as vice president.

The meeting also included the swearing-in of two re-elected board members: García, representing Board District 2 and Zimmer, representing Board District 4. 

The newest Board Member, Mónica Ratliff, was sworn-in by her mother.  Representing Board District 6, Ratliff is a lawyer, who since 2001 has taught third, fourth and fifth grades at San Pedro Elementary School located in downtown Los Angeles near the garment district.

Today’s meeting also featured performances by students playing violins and a cello from El Sereno Elementary School; singers and performers from Hollywood High School and the Glee Club and Acappella Voice Club from Verdugo Hills High School.

The next school board meeting is scheduled on Tuesday, August 20, 2013.

The first day of school for the 2013-14 academic year will be Tuesday, August 13, with the exception of Bell High School, the only campus in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) that continues to operate on a multi-track year-round calendar.
