LAUSD Board President Mónica García Lauds Contract Extension for Superintendent John Deasy

LOS ANGELES (Oct. 10, 2012) - Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education members expressed a vote of confidence in approving a one-year contract extension for Superintendent John Deasy by a 6-0 vote. Board Member Dr. Richard Vladovic was absent from the closed session meeting due to hardship. The extension increases Deasy’s current contract to three years.

“Under Dr. Deasy’s leadership, LAUSD is increasingly viewed as a leader in so many areas, from our academic achievement to our pilot teacher evaluation program to our efforts to graduate every student college-and-career-ready,” said Board President Mónica García. “Our students are benefiting from his innovative and visionary direction of LAUSD.”

LAUSD underwent several changes during Dr. Deasy’s first full year at the helm of the second-largest school district in the country. The District focused on five goals: 100 percent graduation; Proficiency for All; 100 percent Attendance; Parent and Community Engagement; and School Safety. The District also reorganized into regional Educational Service Centers, and one Intensive Support and Innovation Center, to help schools share best practices and receive more personalized support.

More LAUSD students are proficient or advanced in the core subjects than ever before; more students are taking and passing Advanced Placement exams than in the past five years. Suspension and dropout rates are down and graduation rates are up to 64 percent. In short, LAUSD is moving forward together.

“LAUSD transitioned its leadership very well,” García said. “Dr. Deasy and his administrative team helped move our district forward in the face of so many challenges. It is evident that there is good, thoughtful leadership at LAUSD and the unanimous vote validates that.”

Board Vice President Tamar Galatzan added: “It is never easy to be Superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District, but during these trying financial times the stakes are even higher. I am thrilled Superintendent John Deasy’s contract has been renewed so that together we can continue our important work to improve graduation rates, increase student attendance and make sure all our students graduate from LAUSD career and college ready.”

“Leadership in times of crisis is a rare commodity,” said Board Member Steve Zimmer. “We may not all always agree on every policy, but we are absolutely united on the right of every child to an excellent public education in LAUSD. The Superintendent’s progress towards this goal is undeniable. He works harder than anyone I know. Yesterday’s vote was an endorsement of our commitment to our children, their families and our schools.”

“As the School Board Member representing the Northeast San Fernando Valley, I am proud to renew John Deasy's contract as Superintendent for L.A. schools,” said Board Member Nury Martinez. “I have witnessed the passion and urgency that drives his work and am convinced more and more every day that he is good for kids. Dr. Deasy sets high expectations for LAUSD students and employees, but none higher than the ones that he sets for himself. We have so much work ahead of us and I am confident that this contract renewal will get us closer to our goal of 100 percent graduation rates for college-prepared and career-ready students.”
