TV Station KLCS Nominated for a Pair of Los Angeles Area Emmys

LOS ANGELES (July 6, 2012) – KLCS, a public television station owned and operated by the Los Angeles Unified School District, received a pair of nominations for the 64th Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences recently announced.

“News You Can Use” was nominated in the Informational/Public Affairs category. The monthly magazine-style public affairs series delivers relevant information about the nation’s second- largest school district to local viewers.

The program “is unique in its ability to drill down into issues that impact everyone with an investment in the education of tomorrow’s leaders,” said show host Jorge Briseño. Warres Carey is the producer.

Another series, “Math Park,” was nominated for Instructional Programming. Produced by elementary educator Robert Sharp, the show previously won an Emmy-Award.

“Emmy nominations validate KLCS’ competitive level of content creation,” said Sabrina Thomas, the station’s General Manager. “We are honored by this recognition from our peers within the Los Angeles broadcasting industry, and proud to bring this distinguished acknowledgement to the LAUSD.”

These latest nominations, which recognize broadcast achievements by Los Angeles television stations or cable television systems, represent another dose of good news for KLCS. Its monthly program, “La Familia Importa,” which translates to “Families Matter,” was nominated for a 2012 Imagen Award. That prize honors the best portrayals of Latinos in film and television.

The station’s programming also won multiple Telly bronze awards this year: “A Student’s Life” (two awards), “Between the Lines”, “Totally Unprepared-Let’s Get Ready!”, and “Student Voices: Bullying.” Called the “education station,” KLCS was among nominees chosen from nearly 11,000 entries submitted from all 50 states and numerous countries.

The Emmy selections from KLCS were part of the 123 nominations overall that its members made in 42 categories, according to the academy which oversees the awards. Winners will be announced Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012 at the Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre in North Hollywood. For more information, please visit Also visit
