The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (Public Law 106-390) provides the legal basis for FEMA mitigation planning requirements for State, local and Indian Tribal governments as a condition of mitigation grant assistance. The purpose of hazard mitigation planning is to enact mitigation measures that reduce the risk of loss of life and property damage from future disasters.
 
The Los Angeles Unified School District (District) is in the process of developing a Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP) Update to their 2012 LHMP.  Without this Update, the District would not be eligible for FEMA pre- and post- disaster mitigation grant funds.  This LHMP Update is addressing major natural hazards that may impact District facilities and its operations.  Hazards of concern to the District include earthquake, flood, wildfire, drought and other severe weather hazards.
 
The process began in January 2018, with an initial planning meeting and the establishment of a planning committee comprised of representatives from the District and other key stakeholders.  The plan is scheduled to be finalized and submitted to the California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) and FEMA by the end of August 2018.
