The Los Angeles Trust for Children’s Health is hosting its 3rd Annual Tooth Fairy Convention on February 10, 2018 at Exposition Park near the USC campus. With an expectation of more than 1,000 children, friends, and family members in attendance, the Tooth Fairy Convention is a community event that provides dental screenings, healthy food, prizes, live music and educational programs -- all free to participants.
Dental disease is the most common chronic illness and leading cause of school absences among U.S. children. Moreover, dental disease disproportionately affects low-income students, particularly students of color, despite it being a completely preventable. The Tooth Fairy Convention is a part of The L.A. Trust’s Oral Health Initiative at the Los Angeles Unified School District to eliminate this serious issue in student health.
Since the inception of the Oral Health Screening and Fluoride Varnish Program in 2015, we have been able to provide oral screenings for nearly 10,000 LAUSD students. At the Tooth Fairy Convention, The L.A. Trust looks to galvanize a broader public awareness on the importance of oral health through their Oral Health Initiative.
“We are working together to help eradicate dental disease in Los Angeles,” said The L.A. Trust Executive Director Maryjane Puffer. “This will bring us closer to a world where health equity flourishes.”
Access to oral healthcare for all L.A. Unified students is a vital goal for the community. “The Oral Health Initiative would not be possible without our incredible partner, L.A. Unified,” Puffer said. “The District is so committed to improving the health and lives of our children, they have invested in staff and facilities to make this work real and sustainable.”
“L.A. Unified Student Health and Human Services is committed to efforts, like the Tooth Fairy Convention, that improve outcomes for our students and wellness in our communities. When our children are healthy, they are better able to learn, attend, and graduate. Oral health is therefore a critical element toward achieving our goal of 100% graduation, college and career readiness,” said Executive Director of Student Health and Human Services Erika Torres.
The Tooth Fairy Convention is 10:00 am to 2:00 pm PT; Saturday, February 10, 2018; at Christmas Tree Lane, Exposition Park, 700 Exposition Park Dr., L.A., 90037.
The L.A. Trust for Children’s Health (The L.A. Trust) supports the Los Angeles Unified School District’s goals of increasing graduation rates and improving the academic achievement of LAUSD’s 640,000 students by keeping the students healthy. Since its inception in 1991, The L.A. Trust, a 501 c (3) organization, has shaped and implemented mental, dental and behavioral health and wellness programs at LAUSD schools, including the creation of 15 full-service school-based Wellness Centers that provide comprehensive primary care medical services to students and their families.
