San Fernando High Dedicates Music Building In Memory of Legendary Educator Richard Gigger Jr.
8/9/2017, 6:00 PM
WHAT: Richard Gigger Jr. was a celebrated musician and educator who taught thousands of students during 17 years as the music teacher at San Fernando High. With his wife, Ellen Kaminer-Gigger, the duo affectionately known as “Gig and Mrs. G” led the school’s band and drill teams to 13 consecutive championships.
The grandson of a slave, Gigger served 25 years in the U.S. Army, including a stint as the bandmaster, before teaching. His skill, energy and dedication earned the respect of his students, who organized a memorial following his death in November 2016 at the age of 87.
The building housing the school’s music classrooms will be dedicated as The Gigger Building during a special ceremony that will include the unveiling of a mural honoring his career.
