WHAT: Short Avenue Elementary School will receive $10,000 to upgrade the campus library, plus a visit from best-selling author Amy Ephron, as the winner of L.A. Unified’s Summer Reading Challenge.
Sixteen students from Short Avenue Elementary, and 224 others from across the District, answered the call when Superintendent Michelle King challenged kids to read 100 minutes a week during their summer break. By logging the books they completed, the students qualified their school to participate in a random drawing for the grand prize.
Top District officials will present Short Avenue with a check during an assembly celebrating the school’s win. Ephron will read to fifth- and sixth-graders from The Castle in the Mist, her first book for young readers, and will also autograph copies of her book for the 16 Short Avenue youngsters who participated in the reading challenge.
