Mr. Zimmer appointed colleague Dr. George J. McKenna III to a second term as board vice president.
In addition, Karen Calderon, president of the student body at Alexander Hamilton Senior High School, was sworn in as the board’s student representative.
During the first meeting of the 2016-17 year, Mr. Zimmer thanked each of his colleagues, noting their specific contributions to the board and to the District. He noted that among them, the seven-member board has more than 300 years’ experience in public education.
“I am honored and humbled to have the confidence of my colleagues and our school family in moving forward with urgency to make dreams come true through public education in Los Angeles,” he said.
In outlining his long-term goals, Mr. Zimmer said he wants to bolster access to early-education programs as a strategy for improving elementary literacy and to provide opportunities for all graduates to be fluent in at least two languages so they can compete in the global economy.
Mr. Zimmer also noted gains the District has made in raising its graduation rate and said he envisions a day in which L.A. Unified “will take the word ‘dropout’ and put it in the history book.”
“We are one community and we have to do this together,” Mr. Zimmer said. “We must rally around our kids and our families. We should make decisions as if they are for our own kids, our own parents, our brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews.”
