WHAT: Bethune Middle School & Math Science Magnet will host a “Million Father March,” asking male parents to come with their children to the first day of school. This is part of a national effort to provide the educational services that improve the lives of less-advantaged black communities and to close the academic achievement gap. The march sends a message of safety, support and encouragement to children.

A father’s involvement in a child’s life is often considered a critical step to improving academic performance. Bethune’s goal is attracting male parents to support students on the first day of school. Bethune is adopting a pledge for fathers and, men in general, that reads: “I will encourage all children to do their best every day at school; I am responsible for my child’s education; I will volunteer at my child’s school this year.”
