Organized by the nonprofit Partnership for a Walkable America, Walk to School Day will be observed on Wednesday as part of an international effort to help build awareness for the need for walkable communities. The events planned by L.A. Unified schools include:

School Board President Mónica García and other officials will lead a walk to Magnolia Elementary School, 1626 S. Orchard Ave., Los Angeles. The event will start at 7:30 a.m. at Iglesia de Dios de La Profecia, 1519 S. Hoover St.

School Board Vice President Nick Melvoin will meet students at 8 a.m. at Venice Boulevard and Walgrove Avenue and walk with them to Mark Twain Middle School, 2224 Walgrove Ave., Los Angeles.

School Board Member Scott Schmerelson, School Police Chief Steven Zipperman and Deputy City Attorney Jackie Lawson will join more than 200 students during an event organized by Holmes Middle School. Participants will meet at 7 a.m. in the parking lot of the Target score at 8999 Balboa Blvd., Northridge, and make the half-mile walk to Holmes, 9351 Paso Robles Ave., Northridge. Students will be carrying banners and posters they created for the annual event.

At 7:30 a.m., School Board Member Kelly Gonez will be at Panorama City Elementary School, 8600 Kester Ave. Students will be encouraged to use neighborhood streets and crosswalks before a schoolwide walk around the Panorama City Elementary track.

Judith F. Baca Arts Academy, 1536 East 89th St., Los Angeles, will host a half-hour event starting at 7:45 a.m., to raise awareness of pedestrian safety. The issue is timely since a student was struck by a car last year while walking to school.
